COVID – 19 is having a huge effect over people’s jobs, production, and daily life. Beginning in March, many companies decided to let their employees work remotely. There was one big problem – massive computer shortages. The global supply chain for computer components and production slowed to a stop. This became a huge problem for production of intel-based systems and prices started to soar. In the United States, laptops started becoming scarce and hard to find. Other essential technology items like monitors, video conference cameras, headsets, keyboards, docks, and even HDMI cables were very limited. Most monitors and laptops had depleted in stock and people were waiting for laptops to become available again.
The chart above shows the growth in shipment and market between HP, Lenovo, Dell, Apple,Acer, and ASUS. There was a big jump with HP devices being ordered in Quarter 2of 2020, which was the start of the Coronavirus panic in the United States. These numbers differed drastically from Q2 2019. Overall, there was almost a 3%growth in technology purchases. Although these appear to be short-term business needs, it is expected that sales will drop again next year for these technology companies.
Many companies are starting to understand how important access to laptops are for work environments. Looking ahead, more companies should be spending their resources to have access to laptops for all or most employees. Remote work will also become more prevalent in any job. It is essential for every company to have an emergency plan in case of disasters or pandemics. Laptops serve as a good back up emergency plan if working from an office becomes unavailable.
